I discovered orb photography while caught in a rain storm with my bike and camera. When I pulled over to wait for the storm to pass I found a clear marble on the ground and tried to shoot pictures through it. It was quite a challenge. Not only did I have to compose and focus the refracted picture inside the glass marble, but also the scene surrounding it.

The rest is history. I now have various sizes of glass balls and a crystal ball. Glass balls have imperfections which can add interesting characters to the photo; the crystal ball is perfectly clear. Both are certainly much easier to shoot through than a tiny marble.
